Wild Yam

(Dioscorea villosa)

Wild Yam Benefits at a Glance:

  • May contribute to balanced estrogen levels during menopause
  • Supports adrenal function and protects against stress
  • Encourages a healthy inflammatory response

Wild yam contains a compound called diosgenin, which may contribute to balanced estrogen levels, especially during menopause. With natural anti-inflammatory properties and by supporting the endocrine system, it may help reduce the severity of symptoms and discomfort associated with hormonal fluctuations – such as menstrual cramps, irregular menstrual cycles, or hot flashes.

While more research is needed, animal studies suggest wild yam can have promising effects on fertility by increasing progesterone levels and acting as a phytoestrogen.

Why It’s Included:

The phytoestrogens in wild yam can help balance your natural estrogen levels while eliminating the synthetic estrogen from oral contraceptives. It can also help eliminate xenoestrogens from environmental sources (including pesticides and factory-farmed animal products), which are harmful to the body and may contribute to estrogen dominance.
